It was by chance that I chose Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s works. I was reviewing Edgar Allan Poe’s works for I wanted to write my final paper on them, but then I flipped through the pages near his works, and I saw a poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. And I must say it was like love at first sight when I read that poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It stunned me by its simplicity and yet beautiful images it creates. Its language was simple but draws out a very lovely atmosphere and made me muse on it after reading it. It gave out a fresh air. The choices of its words were simple and fair. Then I went through his other works and found them as nice and charming as the one I first read. So I changed my mind to write my final paper on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s works instead of Edgar Allan Poe’s works. For since I had already had a presentation on Edgar Allan Poe’s works in class, now I would like to try something that is new and also nice. The followings will be my comments on three of his poems, and then my translations for them.
My comments on these three poems：
I can read these three of his poems in a rap way, just like I did it with one of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems in class. I should say that the poem Excelsior could be read in a rap way much better than the other two poems The Fire of Drift-wood, and My Lost Youth, and the poem of Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee. I think it is because the lines in Excelsior are shorter than that of Annabel Lee. And the length in each line of Excelsior is similar.
Excelsior is a poem about a traveler who had only one goal stuck into his head that was to get higher and nothing could make him stop, not even the warm light of houses, nor the warm welcome of a girl, nor the storm that will come at night, nor the avalanche could stop him. And in the end he died. He did what he determined to do and he ended up losing his life.
The Fire of Drift-wood is a poem about a bunch of people hanging around in a house by the sea and talked about the things that were past. As they talked on, they discovered something sad within their hearts. Then the narrator compared the likeness between fire of drift-wood and the fire within hearts that are craving for something.
My Lost Youth is a poem about a person thinking of his hometown, his youth and the old song that brought back his memories. He remembered many things in his hometown though it was not the same any more. But when he got there, the woods there was still familiar and thus he found his memories of youth back again.
What the two poems, which are Excelsior, The Fire of Drift-wood have in common is that they both mentioned night, and this is the only thing they have in common and it doesn’t mean much, it is only a coincidence. The person in Excelsior was trying very hard to achieve his goal and thus died, and the people in The Fire of Drift-wood were regretting about the adventure their heart wished for and they had not gone for it. Maybe it was because they did not go for it that they could sit there alive and talked about the past.
What the two poems, which are The Fire of Drift-wood, and My Lost Youth have in commons are that they both mentioned fort, town, sea, and are both about memories, and both use the first person narrator. In The Fire of Drift-wood there were more than one people talking about the past, but in My Lost Youth there was only one person thinking of his lost youth.
Comparing the two poems, Excelsior and My Lost Youth, the character in Excelsior was a youth and the character in My Lost Youth had lost his youth. These two poems had nothing in common.
The author wrote about memories, goals, youth, and things that one’s heart would deeply yearn for in a tone that is not too intense but gentle and slow like a river that flows smoothly.
